Around 1 in 4 adults in the UK are affected by a mental health problem each year.

If you or someone you know is suffering with a mental health issue, it is vital that the right support is given to help you/them.

Below are a list of charities and organisations that are experts in mental health and will be able to support you through the issue, no matter how big or small.

The Samaritans

Mind

Mind is a mental health charity who provides advice and support to anyone suffering a mental health illness. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. Mind wants to ensure no one goes through a mental health problem alone.

You can contact them via their website or on the mind information line 0300 123 3393. Alternatively if you need urgent help press the yellow “I need urgent help” button located at the top of the page on their website.

Derbyshire Mental Health Support Line

If you want to talk to someone about your emotional wellbeing the Derbyshire Mental Health support line is on 0800 028 0077 (7 days a week, 24hrs a day). It’s staffed by mental health professionals and is for all ages.

Talking Mental Health Derbyshire

“Talking Mental Health Derbyshire is a service provided by the NHS offering a range of talking therapies for people experiencing common psychological difficulties such as those feeling anxious, low and depressed.”

The Derbyshire recovery partnership –

Derbyshire Recovery Partnership provides help and support for those with alcohol and drug problems. They can help you to either stop or gain control of your use and to start to build positive relationships for you, your family and your community.

Stand to are an alcohol and drug misuse service designed specifically for ex-forces members in Derbyshire.

“At STAND TO our dedicated, experienced and highly trained staff, volunteers and peer mentors (most of whom themselves are ex- forces), have a particular awareness of the issues veterans and their families may experience.

We acknowledge, understand and appreciate the sacrifices that ex-forces personnel and their families have made.

We also understand some of the challenges individuals may face in admitting alcohol is a problem and the conflict often felt in asking for support”

VitaMinds

Oasis – Time to Talk

Time to Talk is a self-help group open for members of the community who are struggling with their mental health. They offer a friendly, safe place to talk and listening support.

YoungMinds

YoungMinds are the UK’s leading charity for supporting children through mental health problems. Their vision is to lead the fight for a future where all young minds will be supported and empowered.

They also offer support for parents on how to support their child through mental health difficulties.

Derbyshire Recovery and Peer Support Service

This is a local service that offers advice and information on mental illness, one to one staff support, telephone support, recovery education and social activities in the local community. This is a safe place to talk whilst also encouraging you to be involved in the local community to help you regain positive mental health.

The service is open to anyone over the age of 18 living in Erewash and the South Derbyshire area. Find out more by going to their website.

Mental Health Enablement Service – Derbyshire County Council

This is a free new service offered by the Mental Health Care Direct team at Derbyshire County Council. It aims to help those suffering with mental health issues gain and develop skills they need to improve their quality of life.

People receiving the service are supported by an enablement worker; they can help them to gain confidence in completing daily tasks such as shopping, cooking etc. People can also be supported to join educational or training classes. But the service cannot provide personal care or medicine administration.

To use the service you must be a resident of Derbyshire (excluding Derby City) and be of working age.

They offer a leaflet with more information on this service and how to get in contact with them.

Bipolar Support Group

Derbyshire Recovery and Peer Support service are starting a peer led support group for anyone with bipolar to meet others, share self management techniques and help each other stay well.

The group is starting on 8th April 2019 and will continue to be on every Monday from 1.30pm till 2.30pm. It will be held at Ilkeston Library, Market St, Ilkeston, DE7 5 RN.

Qwell

Qwell is a FREE online Mental Health and Wellbeing service commissioned by NHS Derby and Derbyshire CCG for parents and carers of young people under the age of 18 that requires no formal referral, instead only requiring you to set up an account on the website.

Available 365 days of the year via mobile, tablet and desktop devices from 12 noon to 10pm Monday-Friday and 6pm-10pm at weekends, the service provides access to accredited counselling support, peer support via online forums and relevant articles detailing a variety of topics.

Kooth

Insight Talking Therapies

If you are going through a difficult time and find yourself struggling to cope, insight healthcare are here to help you.

Insight talking therapies offer a free, confidential service. The service is commissioned by the NHS, and it is available for anyone residing in Derbyshire who is over the age of 16.

First Steps ED

First Steps provide support for anyone who is affected by an eating disorder including family members, carers and parents.

First steps provide a service that is empathetic and non-judgemental and aim to raise awareness of eating disorders.

Their website offers detailed information on how you can get support if you are affected by an eating disorder, including information on their counselling service and online befriending service.

If you contact Beat through either of their helplines you will speak to a trained support worker who will be experienced in talking to people in a similar situation to you.

The helplines are a safe place for you to talk to someone about how you’re feeling, find out more about eating disorders and explore options for help with eating disorders.

Useful Apps

Catch It – Learn how to manage feelings like anxiety and depression with Catch It. The app will teach you how to look at problems in a different way, turn negative thoughts into positive ones and improve your mental wellbeing.

Clear fear – This app is designed for people experiencing anxiety, to learn to reduce the physical responses to threat as well as changing thoughts and behaviours and releasing emotions.

Thrive – Thrive helps you prevent and manage stress, anxiety and related conditions. The game based app can be used to relax before a stressful situation or on a more regular basis to help you live a happier, more stress-free life.

Headspace – This is a guided meditation app designed to reduce stress and encourage better sleep.

Cove – Create music to capture your mood and express how you feel with the Cove app. Instead of words, create music to reflect emotions like joy, sadness, calm and anger. You can store your music in a personal journal, or send them to someone and let the music do the talking.

QuietKit – “Decrease stress and increase focus with our simple guided meditation for beginners.”

Breathe2Relax – “Breathe2Relax is an app for all mobile devices that teaches a skill called “diaphragmatic breathing” to help users feel more relaxed.”

Pzizz – The Pzizz app helps you quickly calm your mind, fall asleep fast, stay asleep, and wake up refreshed.

#StayAlive – An app for those at risk of suicide and those worried about someone.
